Unmanaged Diabetes, High Blood Glucose Levels Tied to Severe COVID-19

Unmanaged diabetes and high levels of blood glucose are associated with more severe COVID-19 and worse recovery rates, suggests a retrospective study presented at the annual scientific sessions of the American Diabetes Association.

Study investigator Sudip Bajpeyi said that patients who were not managing their diabetes with medications appeared to have more severe COVID-19 and duration of hospital stay, in comparison with those who were on medication. Patients with higher blood glucose levels were also shown to have more severe COVID-19 illness and longer duration of hospitalization.
